What to use for
stressed skin

What is stressed skin?

Stress doesn’t just affect the mind—it often shows up on the skin. In Ayurveda, this connection between mind, body, soul, and senses is central to understanding overall health.

Ayurveda approaches stressed skin by supporting both internal balance and external skincare routines. Supporting stressed skin involves optimizing digestion, calming the skin, maintaining hydration, and using gentle products that do not disrupt the skin barrier.

Stressed skin may feel:

  • Dry or uneven
  • Sensitive, red or reactive
  • Dull or lacking vitality

In Ayurveda, this is linked to doshic imbalances, often stemming from diet and lifestyle factors, external influences, and/or other controllable and uncontrollable reasons.

How Ayurveda approaches stressed skin

Support the mind-body connection

Stress directly influences how the body functions, including the skin.

Practices such as meditation, consistent routines, exercising for stress relief, rest and sleep, and calming rituals are central to Ayurvedic health. Aligning daily habits to the wisdom of the circadian rhythm can not only help bio-hack your health, but it can also aid in managing your stress responses and influencing your skin appearance.

Follow a stress-reducing diet

Stress typically affects vata and pitta doshas. Foods that are easy on the digestion and sattwic (pure) are recommended at any time and are particularly desired when under stress. Fresh, cooked, in-season foods should be prioritized. Kidchari, or rice porridge, is a popular dish as an overall digestive support.

Favor foods that are high in antioxidants, and avoid processed, frozen, fermented, spicy, and acidic foods. Caffeine and alcohol should also be avoided. Keep yourself hydrated with room temperature or warm water as dehydration increases cortisol, a stress hormone, in your body.

Under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, you may also add adaptogenic herbs, such as ashwangandha and tulsi to your stress-busting routine. They are best consumed with other synergistic herbs in a variety of forms, from teas to powders.

Ayurvedically speaking, managing stress will often require you to follow a vata- pitta-pacifying diet and lifestyle.

Focus on gentle skin care

When skin feels stressed, it may react by turning red, breaking out, becoming overly dry, and showing other signs of imbalance.

Using skincare products that can further compromise the skin barrier can cause additional or aggravate current symptoms. Thorough cleansing and gentle, nourishing products are often used for stressed skin instead of harsh chemicals.

Maintain hydration, moisture, and nourishment

These practices help support the skin barrier.

Using a combination of cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizing oils and butters helps create a simple, supportive routine. When applying skincare products, start with the lightest and finish with the heaviest products. Purely water-based products will be your lightest and purely butter-based products will be your heaviest products.

Simple routine for stressed skin

Stressed skin often benefits from a simplified routine that focuses on gentle cleansing, hydration, and moisture.

Hydrating steps like toners or serums can help replenish water content, while oils and butters help maintain moisture and support the skin barrier.

A routine that includes products such as the USDA-certified organic MY24/7 by Red Pantz toner, serums, facial oils, and butters can help support a balanced, less reactive skin environment.
